Hiking

A list of our favorite hiking locations and resources by area.

Hiking with Kids Resources

Kids in Parks - Track Trail - A great program which sets up fun activities for kids to do at each participating park.  Print off the activity(s) before you head to the park and then submit online when you return home.  They have a fun variety of activities and the kids can receive prizes based on number completed.

REI Tips for Hiking with infants, toddlers, & kids - REI advice on hiking with kids of different age groups, also be sure to check out their events page.  Your local REI offers many free events and classes to learn more about your local parks, gear, and beginner to expert advice.

Charlotte, NC Area

Anne Springs Close Greenway (Fort Mill, SC) - Only a few miles from our home, these 2100 acres of trails, lakes, and pastures are great for short family hikes, trail running, horseback riding, and canoeing/kayaking.  They host a number of guided adventures throughout the year, kids camps during summer, Thursday night outdoor concerts, and much more.  Anne Springs Close who is now 90 years old opened this area to the public in 1995 and continues to preserve for everyone to enjoy.  Get out and enjoy this area, you may even see Anne out on a hike.  Note:  For young kids use the Dairy Barn entrance to check out the historical buildings with a short easy 0.5 mile hike to the creek.  Lake Haigler entrance provides an easy 1 mile hike around the lake and spillway with plenty of wildlife.

Crowders Mountain NC State Park (Kings Mountain, NC) - Less than a 20 minute drive from Charlotte, Crowders offers a variety of hiking trails for every level of experience.  Take the Fern Trail for a easy hike with the littlest of children.  For a longer but still easy hike, take a morning or afternoon and combine the Fern Trail with Turnback and Lake trails for a 2.1 mile loop.  Our family's favorite has come to be the Pinnacle trail which is a more strenuous 2 mile one way trek to the Pinnacle Overlook.  I recommend this for grade school kids and older, but our 4 year old was determined to hike these 4 miles on her 4th birthday, she referred to it as her birthday mountain!
